The Business of Being Born
New Line Home Video 2007
A must-see for any woman who is deciding what kind of care she wants to receive when she gives birth. Caution: Although this film brilliantly exposes the shortcomings of hospital births, it may not prepare you for the dangers in choosing a home birth attendant. If the home birth attendant is working for a doctor under protocols that “risk out” women for ambiguous diagnostic test results, some women find themselves sent, at the last minute, to an obstetrician-gynecologist that they hardly know, and shunted into the hospital system without having any preparation for it. Certified nurse-midwives and doulas are legally subordinate to the doctors they work with and cannot protect the woman from being mistakenly “risked out”, or subjected to unnecessary and excessive intervention.
